I Knit Show

Lontoon matka sujui hyvin. Eksyin säännöllisesti joka päivä palatessani metroasemalta hotellille, mutta en kertaakaan ajanut metrolla väärään suuntaan. Matkalla oli pieniä harmeja, kuten hotellissa tehdyt korjaustyöt jotka vaativat pääsyä asiakkaiden huoneisiin joka päivä, syy vaihdellen ikkunanpesusta vesikatkokseen tai nettipiuhojen tarkistamiseen. Näistä ei tietenkään ollut mitään etukäteismainintaa  varausta tehdessäni. Vesikatkoksen sentään vältin, koska saavuin vasta sen päätyttyä.

My trip to London went well. I got lost on every day when I returned from underground station to hotel, but I didn't travel to wrong direction even once. There were small troubles, like repair works in the hotel which required access to my room every day. The reason changed from window washing to data plug repairs. If I had known about this when I booked, I probably would have chosen another hotel. At least I managed to avoid the water cut off because I arrived on Thursday afternoon.

Englantilainen vesi maistuu pahalta, oli se sitten hanasta tai pullosta peräisin. Marks & Spencerin luomumaitosuklaanapit ovat ihania, harmittelen ettei niitä myyty lentokentällä. Oli mukavaa tavata foorumiystäviä. Vietin iltaa Janen ja Natalien kanssa oppien monenlaisia uusia asioita kuten 1) En osaa polkea Majacraftin Little Gem-rukkia lainkaan, se on ihan toisenlainen kuin Sonata. Lakkaan edes harkitsemasta Majacraftin rukin hankintaa. Siitä tulisi vain itku. Itsetuntoni kannalta oli onnekasta, että Ashfordilla osasin kehrätä. 2) Kehräysvillavaraston ja lankavaraston lisäksi ihmisellä on hyvä olla myös nappivarasto. Minullakin on nyt Janen ansiosta sellaisen alku.
Lähdin hotellille hyvin lahjottuna, kuten kuvasta näkyy. Natalielta saatua kehräysvillaa, nappeja Janelta, samoin Romney-fleeceä ja kaksi vyyhtiä The Yarn Yardin Bonnya jotka vaihdoin etukäteisesti suomenlampaanvillaan.

English water tastes bad, both from the tap and from the bottle. I had a brief love affair with Marks & Spencer organic milk chocolate buttons and was very disappointed because I couldn't find any from the airport. It was lovely to meet forum friends. I spent a nice evening with Jane and Natalie and learned some new things like
1) I cannot spin on Majacraft Little Gem. Treadling is so much different than on Kromski that I cannot even keep going on the same direction. I cross Majacrafts from my list. I was relieved to see that I could spin on Ashford, so I haven't been a lunatic thinking I actually knew how to spin. 2) A knitter needs a fiber stash, a yarn stash, but also a button stash! Now I have a small one, thanks to Jane.
I went back to hotel with lots of lovely things. Natalie gave me the fiber in upper left corner of the picture, then there is my new button stash, two skeins of Bonny I swapped with Natalie for some Finnsheep fiber and some Romney fleece from Jane, I haven't spun from a fleece before, only tops.

Halliin, jossa I Knit-tapahtuma pidettiin, oli pitkä jono, ja olin jo huolestunut että en ehtisi kuuntelemaan Jane Sowerbyn esitelmää viktoriaanisen ja nykyaikaisen neulonnan eroista. Historian harrastajana tämä kiinnosti minua erityisesti, mutta jouduin pettymään. Puhe pidettiin verhoilla messutilasta eristetyssä nurkassa, mutta järjestäjät eivät olleet huolehtineet äänentoistosta millään tavalla. Jane Sowerbyllä ei ollut mikrofonia, ja hänellä on luonnostaan vähän hentoinen ääni, joten en kuullut sanaakaan koko esitelmästä vaikka istuin keskivaiheilla ja raahasimme kaikki tuolit mahdollisimman lähelle lavaa. Tähän olin tosi pettynyt, ja vähän ärtyinen kun myöhemmin näin että mikrofoni oli kyllä löytynyt muotinäytöstä ja järjestäjien kuulutuksia varten. Glynis kertoi minulle, että viime vuonna oli käynyt samalla tavalla. Kun en kuullut mitään, lähdin pois ja palasin takaisin esityksen loppuvaiheilla parahiksi näkemään VLT:n huiveja ja saamaan nimikirjoituksen kirjaani.

There was a long queue to hall where the I Knit Day was held and I was worried I couldn't make it in time for Jane Sowerby's presentation on Victorian knitting. I was particularly interested in the topic because history is one of my loves, but I was disappointed. I did get there in time, but the presentation was held in the corner of main hall, separated with curtains from the market area. You can guess how much background noise a hall full of knitters will produce. The organizers hadn't thought about this at all, and they had no microphone for Jane Sowerby. Her voice isn't strong, and although I sat in the middle row, I couldn't hear anything. We dragged our chairs as near the stage as we could, but I couldn't make out the words so I left and came back later for book signing. I was very disappointed, because this presentation interested me very much. Later on I was quite annoyed to see they had found a microphone for fashion show and organizer's announcements. Glynis told me that the same thing happened last year also, and I cannot understand why the problem wasn't fixed this year. Messutila oli isohko, mutta ei lainkaan samaa luokkaa kuin Pirkkahallissa vaikkapa. Näköjään lankadieetti on iskenyt pahan kerran päälle, sillä vaikka lähdin matkaan vakaana aikomuksenani ostaa paljon lankaa, suuresta valikoimasta matkaan tarttui lopuksi lammasmuki (koska näin Janella sellaisen vihreän, ja tykästyin) ja kaksi viidenkymmenen gramman satsia kehräysvillaa jossa on kaikkia kuituja banaanista suri alpakkaan ja bambuun. Yarn Harlotin puheen aikana sain valmiiksi ainoan matkalle mukaan ottamani neuleen, Falling Water-huivin, joten ennen lähtöäni kävin ostamassa Natural Dye Studion kojusta vyyhdin sukkalankaa ja sukkapuikot ajankuluksi lentokentälle. Väri oli ihana, mutta lanka ei. Se päästää hirveästi väriä, sormet muuttuvat oransseiksi kutoessa ja puikot samoin. Ensimmäinen sukka on puolivälissä ja pidän omasta mallista todella paljon, joten käytän langan loppuun, mutta en varmaankaan osta enää toiste.

I think the yarn diet thing has gone on too long.  I planned to come home with a great haul, but in the end I bought only a sheep mug (because Jane had a green one, and I liked it) and two 50g batts from Rockpool Candy. The batts have a bit of everything from banana to bamboo and suri alpaca fiber. I finished my only travel knitting project during the Yarn Harlot's speech, so before I left I bought a skein of sock yarn and sock needles from Natural Dye Studio's booth to keep me entertained in airfield. The color is lovely, but the dyeing job isn't. The dye rubs off on my fingers and needles, turning them orange. I'll drop an e-mail to owner later on, but I've knitted 50% of the first sock and I'm very fond of the look, so I have to keep knitting whether the color runs or not.

Yarn Harlotin puhe oli hauska, jotkut asiat olin jo lukenut hänen kirjoistaan, mutta yhtä kaikki hyvin viihdyttävää kuunneltavaa ja kalliimman lipun arvoista. Tulin kotiin signeeratun kirjan kera. Reissu oli mukava, mutta kun koneen pyörät kopsahtivat Helsinki-Vantaan lentokentälle, olin hyvin onnellinen päästyäni takaisin kotiin.

Yarn Harlot's speech was funny, some things I had already read from her books, but it was enjoyable performance anyway and well worth of more expensive ticket. I came home with a signed book. The journey was good, but when the plane landed on Helsinki-Vantaa airport, I was happy. I love being at home.

It was good to meet you Hanne - I didn't buy much either apart from two Rockpool Candy batts thanks to your example, two skeins of sock yarn and a Yarn Harlot book. I'm glad you are safe home.

I'm sorry you were disappointed by the audio problems in the Jane Sowerby lecture. Last year was in a completely different venue so it's not really relevant. This year we were told by the venue that microphones can be used anywhere in the hall and the output isolated in separate areas. This wasn't the case and believe me we were devastated when it became clear that we couldn't do anything to improve the sound. Jane Waller encountered the same problem and used a mike for a part of her talk but came out to the whole hall but couldn't be heard inside the space itself. Disaster! We didn't find mikes for the fashion shows, that was all planned and we had those already, but it simply wouldn't have made any difference if Jane had had a microphone. I';m sorry this made you annoyed and I hope you still managed to enjoy the day. Next year...no presentations in the main hall. I promise.
